Craig V. Thornton
Senior Vice President: Chief Strategy Officer and Managing Director of Health Research
Craig Thornton directs Mathematica’s Health Services Research Division. During his more than 30 years at Mathematica, his research has focused on health services research, disability policy, evaluation design, and benefit-cost analysis. He also coordinates strategic planning for Mathematica.
Thornton continues to advise ongoing studies of programs and policies to assist people with disabilities in participating fully in economic and community life. He has studied how well managed care and care-management serve people with chronic illnesses and functional impairments as well as how modifications to the Medicare and Medicaid programs could support better integration and health for people with such conditions. He has extensive experience designing and implementing large multisite demonstration evaluations and conducting process, impact, and benefit-cost analyses.
Thornton has published widely in peer-reviewed journals, such as Health Services Research, Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation, American Sociological Review, and Journal of Policy Analysis and Management. In addition, he has served on many expert panels as well as on the boards of directors of Mathematica and of the Center for Studying Health System Change. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from Johns Hopkins University.
