Diane E. Herz
Vice President; Director, DC Survey Research, Surveys and Information Services Division
Diane Herz is vice president and director of survey research in Mathematica’s Washington, DC, and Oakland, CA offices.
An expert in employment-related survey research, Herz is responsible for providing oversight and quality assurance on projects for the Department of Labor (DOL), the National Science Foundation, and other agencies. She most recently led the Evaluation of State Labor Market Information Improvement Grants Evaluation for DOL. Herz has more than 25 years of experience conducting survey research related to employment. Prior to joining Mathematica, she directed the Current Population Survey program at the Bureau of Labor Statistics, where she was responsible for production of the monthly report on unemployment in the United States. She also directed the development of the national American Time Use Survey program.
Herz has led questionnaire design, testing, and analysis efforts on a range of subjects. She currently advises on the design of a longitudinal survey of unemployment insurance recipients. She has also led development of questions used to measure time use, volunteering, civic engagement, employer-provided training, and the labor force characteristics of persons with disabilities and veterans. Herz has published many articles in peer-reviewed journals, including the Monthly Labor Review, and has contributed to several books. Her research topics have included survey development and management, the employment and time-use patterns of population subgroups, employer-provided training, and pension and retirement trends.
Herz has an M.S. in management information systems and a B.S. in economics. She is also a graduate of the Federal Executive Institute, the Fellows program of the Council for Excellence in Government, and the Tuck Business School’s Leadership for Strategic Impact program. Herz has been elected to a three-year term as president of the Washington Statistical Society and will serve first as president-elect, then president, then past president.
