Joshua Furgeson
Senior Researcher
Senior researcher Joshua Furgeson specializes in education research focused on charter schools and effective instructional practices. He is a key member of Mathematica’s research team for the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC), conducted for the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences.
Furgeson holds diverse roles on the WWC. He leads efforts to create and update practice guides that provide practical, evidence-based recommendations to teachers and administrators. He also trains WWC reviewers and develops standards used to certify them. He serves as deputy principal investigator for the special education topic area and has reviewed well-known studies for WWC Quick Reviews.
Furgeson currently serves as project director of the Evaluation of the Equity Project Charter School, examining an innovative model that attracts and rewards teachers with high salaries and extensive professional development. He was a task leader for Mathematica’s qualitative analysis of leadership practices at Knowledge is Power Program schools. He also led the rigorous experimental analysis for the National Study of Charter Management Organization Effectiveness.
Before joining Mathematica in 2008, Furgeson was a research director at the Argosy Foundation. He has held teaching positions at Carnegie Mellon University and Cathedral High School. He has been published in peer-reviewed journals, including Education Finance and Policy and Law and Human Behavior. He holds a Ph.D. in public policy and management from Carnegie Mellon University.
