John Hall
Senior Fellow
Senior fellow John Hall is a senior statistician who specializes in survey sampling.
Hall has more than 30 years of experience designing survey samples, conducting nonresponse bias analysis, computing sample weights, and estimating sampling error for complex surveys. His expertise includes area probability samples, multiple frame samples, samples from list frames, and both landline and cell phone random-digit dialing.
Hall has served as lead statistician on a number of Mathematica’s nutrition studies. On the School Nutrition Dietary Assessment Study-III and IV (SNDA-III, SNDA-IV) studies, he employed a multistage sample for the collection of food-related data from nationally representative samples of approximately 600 school food authorities and 900 public schools. For the National Food Purchase and Acquisition Survey, he designed a multistage sample to collect food acquisition data from 5,000 households, and oversaw sample selection, nonresponse bias analysis, and weighting. For the National Estimates of the National School Lunch Program, and the School Breakfast Program Erroneous Payments, he employed a multistage sample of school food authorities, schools, and students.
Hall was the lead statistician on the Health Tracking Household Survey, a telephone survey of more than 8,000 households. For the five rounds of the Household Survey of the Community Tracking Study, he designed the sample, conducted sample selection, reviewed the weighting procedures, and oversaw weight trimming.
Widely published in peer-reviewed publications, Hall holds a master’s degree in applied statistics from Rutgers University, a Certificate in Survey Sampling from the University of Michigan, and a J.D. from the University of Denver. He is also a volunteer statistical adviser for Statistics Without Borders, a member of the American Statistical Association, and a referee for several journals including Public Opinion Quarterly and the American Journal of Public Health.
