Melissa J. Azur
Researcher

Melissa Azur is a researcher with an interest and expertise in behavioral health, child health, quantitative methods, and quality of care.

Azur currently leads a project to develop and test quality measures for adults with post-traumatic stress disorder treated in ambulatory care settings. She also leads a Mathematica project for the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services to develop quality-of-care performance measures for inpatient psychiatric facilities. She works on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Mental Health Services Survey and has provided technical assistance to grantees on both Project Access, which aims to improve care for children and youth with epilepsy, and the Chronic Care Initiative, a program to improve the health care system for Washington, D.C., residents living with common chronic illnesses.

Before joining Mathematica in 2010, Azur was a faculty assistant scientist and consultant at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where she worked on a National Institute of Mental Health-funded project to examine disparities in children’s mental health services. She was an adjunct instructor at Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland. At Grassroots Crisis Intervention in Columbia, Maryland, Azur held crisis and senior counselor positions and was named employee of the year. She has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and holds a Ph.D. in public health from the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Azur is a peer reviewer of the American Journal of Managed Care, Medical Care, Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology, the Journal of Behavioral Health Services and Research, and Youth Violence Juvenile Justice.
