Latin America and Caribbean Reading Evaluation
During this five-year project, Mathematica team will rigorously evaluate and cost U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) investments in early literacy and access to education in conflict settings in the LAC region. USAID intends to commission 8 to 10 evaluations over the life of the contract in countries receiving basic education support from USAID, including the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Peru. Most of the evaluations will be multi-year, and some will be multi-country. Approximately half of the evaluations are expected to use a randomized controlled trial design while the remainder of the evaluations will likely be quasi-experimental evaluation designs. Capacity building is a central feature of this project, as the team will work with local researchers to conduct rigorous evaluations. Local researchers will play also important roles in evaluation implementation.
The first evaluation is focusing on an early literacy intervention forĀ bilingual populations in Guatemala and Peru, and is entitled “Leer Juntos, Aprender Juntos.” The intervention is being designed and implemented by Save the Children.
