Angela M. Gerolamo
Senior Researcher
Angela Gerolamo is a senior researcher and a board-certified advanced practice registered nurse with diverse health care industry experience. Her work focuses on evaluating quality of care for individuals with complex chronic conditions and co-occurring mental health and substance use problems. She also specializes in the evaluation of initiatives to address nursing workforce issues.
Gerolamo is currently principal investigator for a Department of Veterans Affairs project that assesses the extent to which mental health residential treatment programs have implemented procedures and practices to improve access to care, care quality, environmental safety and security, and program operations. She provides on-site consultation to hospital administrators and program managers on process redesign to improve quality and efficiencies in operations.
Gerolamo also assists the Center for Health Care Strategies to evaluate a program that integrates behavioral health care and physical care for Medicaid beneficiaries with serious mental illness. In nursing workforce research, Gerolamo is the principal investigator of the Evaluation of the New Jersey Nursing Initiative, an advocacy initiative funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to alleviate the nurse faculty shortage in New Jersey. This evaluation involves collaboration with multiple stakeholders and the use of formative evaluation methods to identify mid-course corrections to improve the effectiveness of program strategies.
In other work, Gerolamo has focused on assessing and measuring care quality. For the Evaluation of the Extended Medicare Coordinated Care Demonstration, she examined features of coordinated care programs that contributed to improved quality of care and decreased costs for Medicare beneficiaries. In collaboration with the National Committee on Quality Assurance and the American Medical Association, she developed physician quality measures for the Physician Quality Reporting Initiative program.
Gerolamo’s publications have appeared in Nursing Outlook and the Archives of Psychiatric Nursing, and she has presented at the American Psychiatric Nurses Association and the Veterans Affairs National Mental Health conference. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and a Master's degree in mental health nursing from Temple University. She has been certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as an advanced practice nurse since 2001.
