Neil S. Seftor
Senior Researcher
Neil Seftor is a senior economist who specializes in education research, with expertise in econometric and evaluation methodology, including the design and analysis of education policy evaluations using random assignment and quasi-experimental methods.
Seftor is currently a deputy director of the U.S. Department of Education’s What Works Clearinghouse and principal investigator of the High School Math topic area. His responsibilities include overseeing topic area reviews, training and certification of reviewers, development and revision of review standards, and the technical content of reports in several areas.
Previously, he evaluated Upward Bound and Talent Search, two national programs that prepare economically disadvantaged students to enter and succeed in college. Other work has included the analysis of two evaluations of the Undergraduate Scholarship and Intramural Research Loan repayment programs funded by the National Institutes of Health, contributing to the design, recruitment, data collection, and analysis of the Evaluation of the Impact of Teacher Induction Programs funded by the Department of Education and authoring a report on quality teaching.
Seftor presents at professional conferences and publishes in peer-reviewed journals, such as the Journal of Human Resources. He has a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Virginia.
