Army Unemployment Compensation for Ex-Service Members (UCX) Claimants Initiative

The number of veterans and transitioning service members facing unemployment has increased in recent years and is expected to continue to do so due to the drawdown in Iraq and Afghanistan. To better serve these individuals, the Army UCX Claimants initiative awarded grants to Georgia, Illinois, North Carolina, and Texas in 2012 to spur improvement in strategies in providing reemployment services to veterans and for leveraging assets and sharing data across the unemployment insurance and workforce systems and the Army.

Mathematica is evaluating projects in each state and identifying the extent to which the projects achieve the goals of the initiative. We are answering specific questions about how veterans receive services through the initiative, as well as broader questions about how veterans receive services in American Job Centers, their characteristics, and employment outcomes. Based on our analysis, we will document the project activities best suited for replication in other states.
