PRINCETON, N.J. (September 22, 2008)—Mathematica Policy Research, Inc., one of the nation's premier social policy research firms, plans to open an office in Oakland, California, in January 2009. This new endeavor enhances the company's breadth and capacity to conduct multidisciplinary, integrated, and rigorous research to inform solutions to some of today's most pressing social issues. The company has leased 8,000 square feet on the eighth floor of 505 14th Street in downtown Oakland and plans to employ up to 50 people in the next few years.

Deborah Reed, senior fellow and previously director of research at the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC), will join Mathematica to direct the office. A nationally recognized expert in child poverty and well-being, immigration, income and labor market issues, and racial and ethnic disparities, she is well known for her expertise in state policy topics. She was the first recipient of the PPIC Thomas C. Sutton Chair in Policy Research. Before joining PPIC in 1995, she was an adjunct professor of economics at the University of Michigan and a consultant for the World Bank. Her most recent publications include Can California Import Enough College Graduates to Meet Workforce Needs? Poverty in California: Moving Beyond the Federal Measure, and Retention of New Teachers in California.

Mathematica is recruiting researchers to join its staff of over 170 doctoral-level researchers and work in a multidisciplinary setting that includes staff with degrees in economics, public policy, education, survey research, statistics, psychology, sociology, demography, and related fields.

“I am delighted that Debbie is joining us during this period of dynamic growth. Her experience in federal and state policy issues is valuable as Mathematica’s new office adds enhanced capabilities and accomplished staff to increase our policy contributions,” said Paul Decker, president of Mathematica. “This and other recent developments continue our tradition of collaborating across disciplines, bringing the best analytical and methodological tools to bear on issues of public importance, and developing integrated responses.”

Mathematica strives to improve public well-being by conducting high-quality, objective research and surveys. A nonpartisan firm, its clients include federal and state governments, foundations, and private-sector and international organizations. The employee-owned company, with more than 600 employees, has other offices in Princeton, N.J., Washington, D.C., Cambridge, Mass., and Ann Arbor, Mich., and has conducted some of the most important studies of education, health care, welfare, employment, nutrition, and early childhood policies and programs in the U.S.
