WASHINGTON, D.C. (December 29, 2008)—Mathematica Policy Research, Inc., recently announced the appointment of Diane Herz as director of survey research in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office. She is an experienced leader in both survey management and data analysis. Her research topics have included survey development and management, employment and time-use patterns of population subgroups, employer-provided training, and pension and retirement trends.

Herz, a resident of Bethesda, Md., joined Mathematica earlier this year after 21 years of federal government service at the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In this role, she directed the Current Population Survey (CPS) program, including production of the monthly report on unemployment in the U.S. Her work also included leading efforts to develop questions for large-scale national surveys on disability, Gulf War veterans, Hurricane Katrina evacuees, volunteering, and civic engagement. She also directed the development of the national American Time Use Survey program.

Herz holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Maryland and a master’s of science in Management Information Systems from Nova Southeastern University. She is also a graduate of the Federal Executive Institute and the fellows program of the Council for Excellence in Government. She has published many articles in peer-reviewed journals, including the Monthly Labor Review, and has contributed to several books. She presents her research at a wide range of professional meetings.

“Diane’s extensive experience in leading the development and implementation of large-scale, high-profile federal surveys will be a great asset in exemplifying Mathematica’s reputation for excellence in information collection and analysis,” said Amy Johnson, senior vice president and director of the Surveys and Information Services Division at Mathematica.
