Center for Studying Disability Policy at Mathematica Announces March Forum Date

WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 25, 2009)—The Center for Studying Disability Policy at Mathematica Policy Research, Inc., announces the fourth forum in a new bimonthly lunchtime seminar series aimed at providing policymakers and others with an opportunity to hear about the latest disability policy research findings. "How Will Health System Reform Address the Needs of Working-Age People with Disabilities?” will be held Thursday, March 26, 2009, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Mathematica’s office at 600 Maryland Ave., SW, Suite 550, Washington, D.C. Speakers will be David Stapleton, senior fellow and director of Mathematica’s Center for Studying Disability Policy; Su Liu, senior researcher, Mathematica®; and Peter Thomas, a lawyer with Powers Pyles Sutter & Verville specializing in health care, rehabilitation, disability, and employment issues.
The forum will cover key policy issues concerning health care coverage for working-age people with disabilities. Stapleton will present findings on the experiences of workers with disabilities before, during, and after their entry into the Social Security Disability Insurance program. Liu will discuss findings from analyses of the Medicaid Buy-In program, an optional program that was designed to address coverage issues for workers with disabilities. Thomas will discuss the extent to which major health reform proposals would address these coverage issues.
Future forums will cover health insurance for workers with disabilities and monitoring the status of people with disabilities.

The Center for Studying Disability Policy’s mission is to inform disability policy formation with rigorous, objective research and data collected from the people disability policy aims to serve. The center, headed by Stapleton, was formed in 2007 to coalesce and further strengthen Mathematica’s extensive disability policy research and data collection efforts, and to ensure that the results of Mathematica’s work are accessible to the disability policy community.
