Ponza Named Senior Fellow at Mathematica

PRINCETON, N.J. (January 29, 2009)—Mathematica Policy Research, Inc., has announced the appointment of Michael Ponza, a resident of Yardley, Pa., as senior fellow. This title is reserved for individuals who have nationally recognized expertise in a policy or research field, have established Mathematica as a leader in a technical or methodological area, and have an outstanding record of achievement in directing large and complex projects. Ponza, who joined Mathematica in 1988 as a researcher, is an expert in nutrition policy for children and adults, as well as welfare-to-work and education policy issues.

Ponza is director of operations for the What Works Clearinghouse, a large-scale project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences to bring trustworthy answers to decision makers in education. He also directed and served as principal investigator for a national study of payment errors in the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program. He has taken a lead role on many other large-scale studies, including assessments of the food stamp program, infant feeding practices, and school meal programs.

Before joining Mathematica, Ponza was on staff at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. He publishes in a variety of journals, including the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, Economic Outlook USA, and Public Opinion Quarterly and presents research findings to policy, practitioner, and professional groups. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Michigan.
