Andrew Asher Joins Mathematica as Senior Fellow Contact: Jennifer de Vallance, (202) 484-4692 WASHINGTON, DC—May 14, 2013—Andrew Asher was recently named a senior fellow in Mathematica Policy Research’s Health Research Division. Based in the company’s Washington, DC, office, he has an extensive background in health care management and data analytics—the use of data to help health care payers strengthen the integrity of their programs, realize cost savings, and improve program outcomes. Asher began his career at Mathematica, where he served as a health researcher and analyst from 1989 through 1994. “We’re delighted to welcome Andrew back to Mathematica,” said Randall Brown, director of the company’s health division. “During his impressive career, he has worked closely with state Medicaid agencies, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and other health plans, giving him a deep knowledge of our nation’s health care systems and frameworks. His management expertise and acumen in creatively analyzing data to manage costs and improve health care programs and care delivery is an enormous asset.” Asher rejoined Mathematica in 2013 after serving as vice president and director of government solutions at OptumInsight from 2007 to 2013 and in various earlier leadership roles with the state of Illinois. From 2001 to 2007, he served as the manager of the Fraud Science Team within the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services’ Office of Inspector General (HFS OIG), a group whose innovative fraud detection and prevention was work was featured in GAO and CMS best practice reviews and the trade press. His efforts and those of his teams have contributed to the hundreds of millions of dollars in savings HFS OIG has realized and to the development of new and innovative strategies to prevent, detect, and recover improper payments. Asher holds a master of public policy from the University of Michigan About Mathematica: Mathematica Policy Research seeks to improve public well-being by conducting studies and assisting clients with program evaluation and policy research, survey design and data collection, research assessment and interpretation and program performance/data management.
