Celebrating the International Year of Statistics

Contact: Jennifer de Vallance, (202) 484-4692

PRINCETON, N.J.—July 24, 2013—First-rate statistical analysis, from survey design and implementation to data analysis and quality assurance, is the foundation for all research projects at Mathematica Policy Research. The Cash and Counseling Survey, the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services, and the School Nutrition Dietary Assessment Study are just a few of the large projects that exemplify our work in these areas. During this International Year of Statistics, Mathematica is pleased to feature the innovations and expertise that our staff bring to the field.

Mathematica Experts to Focus on Record Use, Consumer Confidence at the Washington Statistical Society (WWS) Conference

Mathematica is proud to co-sponsor the 2013 DC-AAPOR (WSS) Summer Conference. DC-AAPOR, a chapter of the American Association for Public Opinion Research, and WSS, a chapter of the American Statistical Association, jointly host the annual conference, which features eight sessions and over 50 presentations. Hundreds of statisticians, scholars, survey researchers, and other stakeholders are expected to attend. The conference will take place in Washington, DC, on July 30 and 31. Several Mathematica staff will participate, including:

  • Director of Statistics Donsig Jang, who will chair a session on accessing and using administrative records.
  • Statistician Dmitriy Poznyak, who will give a presentation in a session on identifying and repairing measurement and coverage errors. The presentation is entitled "Can We Have Confidence in Consumer Confidence? Assessing the Temporal Comparability of the Consumer Sentiment Index."

Vice President and Director of Mathematica Survey Research, Diane Herz, Elected President of WSS

An expert in employment-related research, Mathematica’s Diane Herz was elected president of WSS, first serving a term as president-elect under current president Nancy Bates. Ms. Herz has more than 25 years of experience developing and managing surveys and analyzing survey data. She directed the Current Population Survey, which is used to calculate the national unemployment rate. She also led the design of the American Time Use Survey and analyzed survey data on pension and retirement trends as well as the employment and time-use patterns of population subgroups, green jobs, and employer-provided training.

When asked about her new role as WSS president, Ms. Herz said, "Quality data collection and analysis can inform the narrative in just about every policy discussion. I am honored to become part of the WSS leadership team, and I look forward to working with others in the survey research community to provide the public with fact-based information that integrates survey work, statistical design, and rigorous data collection."

Mathematica Experts to Present on a Range of Policy Topics at the 2013 Joint Statistical Meeting

This year’s Joint Statistical Meeting (JSM) will occur on August 3–8 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. More than a dozen Mathematica statisticians and researchers will participate in formal presentations, poster sessions, and moderated panel discussions. The meeting, organized by theme over the course of six days, will feature discussions on a range of policy topics such as hospital quality measures; interviewer observations in household surveys; sampling strategies for hard-to-reach populations; use of administrative records on health insurance; veterans’ health outcomes; and the challenges posed by measurement, complex design, and missing data.
