Karen Bogen

Principal Survey Researcher

Karen Bogen specializes in the design and direction of survey data collection projects. She has extensive experience in health research, including studies of Medicare and other patient populations, and questionnaire development for health projects.

Bogen currently provides survey quality assurance on the Comprehensive Primary Care (CPC) Initiative, an evaluation of cost, quality, and patient and provider experience that is also providing rapid-cycle feedback to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). She also works on the Evaluation of Health Care Innovation Awards (HCIA), Round Two, including questionnaire design, pre-testing, and upcoming data collection for the survey of non-clinician staff.

She recently served as the survey director for a CMS evaluation of community-based care. Her experience includes serving as survey director on health information technology projects, one on personal health records for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the other on electronic health records for the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. In addition, she led the redesign of the questionnaire for the Medicare Contractor Provider Satisfaction Survey.

Before joining Mathematica in 2008, Bogen worked at the Center for Survey Research at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. She designed and managed a number of health studies on tobacco control, unmet needs of adults with disabilities, cultural competence, and informed medical decision making.

Bogen has published in several methodological and subject matter areas, including tobacco control, work and family, and adults with disabilities. She is an active member of the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) and serves as a manuscript reviewer for Public Opinion Quarterly and for the annual AAPOR conference. Bogen holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the Johns Hopkins University and an M.A. in applied social research from the University of Michigan.
