When It Comes to Heart, a Company Is Only as Big as Its People

When I hear “think globally, act locally,” my colleagues at Mathematica come to mind. As a company, we’re dedicated to contributing to the public good in our country and around the world. But our commitment to well-being starts in our own backyard—with a vow to making a difference in the communities where our employees live, work, and play.

Mathematica’s corporate giving philosophy supports our staff in volunteering at a grassroots level to address global social issues like poverty, hunger, health, and housing in their own neighborhoods and cities where our offices are located. We are employee-owned, and our staff play a direct part both in our success as a company and our corporate giving approach. Employees in each site work together to identify an organization to support, and the company matches their volunteer hours with a direct cash donation. A standing committee recommends additional contributions to groups that our employees suggest. In addition, many of our senior executives serve on the boards of these local organizations.

Most of our volunteers have served local organizations over the long term—for example, our DC staff have been preparing and serving meals at the nonprofit Miriam’s Soup Kitchen for three decades, which recently recognized Mathematica for its dependable and hardworking helpers. Staff in New Jersey have supported HomeFront for more than 30 years, contributing close to 800 volunteer hours last year alone. All told, Mathematica distributes $150,000 to $200,000 in funding each year to a variety of social causes through direct contributions and matching donations for staff time.

Because Mathematica is a people-centered organization, we trust in the power of individuals coming together to work on a local level toward a common cause. We also believe that corporations, government officials, the education system, and local communities must share responsibility to address global issues. I’m proud to work at a place in which people are passionate about the work they do, personally and professionally, to deliver on our mission. The talented, compassionate, and dedicated employees we hire make it all happen. Together through sweat equity, we make a difference.
