This dashboard brings focus to the unique health risks faced by women of child-bearing age with opioid misuse—including unintended pregnancies, neonatal opioid dependence, and child protective services involvement. By providing tailored information on opioid overdose death rates, risk factors for opioid misuse, and the locations of nearby treatment facilities for these women, S.T.Op NextGen demonstrates the power of dynamic dashboards to synthesize disparate data sources and help individuals make informed, data-driven decisions.
To allow users to contextualize the scale of the opioid epidemic in their community, the tool presents aggregated, color-coded information on opioid-related death rates among women of child-bearing age, based on CDC WONDER Cause of Death data tailored to the user’s location.
The dashboard also provides information on the risk of opioid misuse among women of child-bearing age who take a prescribed opioid even once, based on the demographic characteristics provided, and using data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
Finally, to help facilitate treatment, the dashboard includes a map showing nearby treatment facilities, based on SAMHSA’s Behavioral Treatment Services Locator. The map and provider list are tailored to prioritize facilities suitable for women with particular barriers to treatment (for example, by accepting individuals without insurance, providing transportation assistance, or having on-site child care).
