Policy in Perspective: How Does the Doctor-Patient Relationship Affect Decision Making?

Mar 09, 2017

In a new article for the Journal of Comparative Effectiveness Research, experts from Mathematica Policy Research reveal why some patients might reject physician recommendations even if they are grounded in good evidence. How do patients respond, for example, if a doctor rushes a visit or doesn’t explain everything clearly? Listen to Mathematica researchers Cara Stepanczuk and Nyna Williams discuss this issue in this episode of the “Policy in Perspective” podcast.

Stepanczuk and Williams explain how a variety of factors—including one’s upbringing, social circles, and the way information is presented—could affect how patients react in a clinical setting. The researchers hope to better understand how these influences can inform the development of strategies to help patients make better decisions at the point of care.
