Literacy in the Developing World

Literacy in the Developing World

Sep 08, 2015

As efforts such as International Literacy Day call attention to worldwide initiatives to enhance education, Mathematica Policy Research contributes to this critical issue by evaluating the impact of literacy and education programs in developing countries.

Through our Center for International Policy Research and Evaluation (CIPRE), Mathematica conducts studies across the globe to assess the impact of programs that are designed to improve access to quality schooling. These include:

  • LAC Reads, a program created to enhance early literacy and educational opportunities in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region, including initiatives in Guatemala, Peru, Honduras, and Nicaragua
  • The Burkinabé Response to Improve Girls' Chances to Succeed (BRIGHT), an effort to improve girls’ educational success in 132 rural villages in Burkina Faso
  • The Niger Education and Community Strengthening program, which aims to increase access to education in targeted villages and to advance student reading achievement through teacher training

These studies build on Mathematica's longtime leadership in education research in the United States and abroad.
