Food Security and Hunger

When households cannot meet their food needs with federal nutrition assistance programs, many turn to the emergency food assistance system for help. This loosely connected network of food pantries, emergency kitchens, and shelters provides food, usually on a walk-in basis. We conducted three national surveys to show how well the system functions as a last resort for needy people, and help the nation's food banks understand their clientele's needs. We also study how the SNAP program affects food security--sufficient access to food for a healthy lifestyle.
