Julia Alamillo

Senior Researcher

Julia Alamillo specializes in designing evaluations and providing evaluation-related technical assistance to programs serving at-risk families, children, and adolescents. Her experience covers a range of program and policy areas, including healthy marriage and relationship education, responsible fatherhood, teenage pregnancy prevention, child welfare, and education.

Alamillo has contributed her expertise in quantitative and qualitative methods to several evaluations of programs designed to improve the well-being of children and families. She currently works on a large, multisite random assignment evaluation of five healthy marriage and relationship education programs for youth and adults. She is also developing measurement tools for an evaluation of professional development approaches to improve educators’ capacity to support adolescents’ self-regulation skill development. Alamillo works directly with teenage pregnancy prevention and child welfare programs to provide evaluation-related technical assistance aimed at helping these programs assess their impacts on the youth and families they serve. Alamillo is also a certified reviewer for the What Works Clearinghouse.

Before joining Mathematica in 2015, Alamillo received a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she was affiliated with the Institute for Research on Poverty and the Center for Demography and Ecology. She has published numerous articles in leading family studies journals including the Journal of Marriage and Family, the Journal of Family Psychology, and the Journal of Family Issues. She also serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Marriage and Family.
