Evaluation Plan of the HHS Opioid Initiative

2012-2016
Prepared for
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is leading a major cross-agency initiative focused on reducing the level of prescription opioid diversion, abuse, addiction, and overdose in our country. We have been commissioned to develop a comprehensive evaluation plan for this initiative and helping to build the evidence base in the following priority areas:

  • Modifying prescribing practices to reduce opioid overdoses and addiction
  • Expanding access to naloxone to prevent opioid-related deaths
  • Increasing access to effective prescriber training and education
  • Promoting the use of medication-assisted treatment in primary care settings to reduce opioid use and the risk of overdose
Mathematica’s work is helping policymakers identify progress toward achieving better long-term outcomes at both the state and national levels.
