Examining Insurers' Best Practices to Curb Opioid Abuse

Prepared for
Massachusetts Office of the Inspector General

This project is designed to reveal promising approaches to help prevent and decrease opioid abuse. We are gathering information on innovative and effective approaches that have been implemented by public and private insurers across several states. Mathematica is conducting an environmental scan of programs and strategies that are currently used by these insurers and health plans, and we are identifying candidates for in-depth interviews. The results will inform a comprehensive report on the characteristics, fiscal impact, strengths, and weaknesses of the strategies programs employed, offering policymakers insight into what does and does not work.
