What Works Clearinghouse

2007-2020

Project Overview

Objective

The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) collects, reviews, and reports on studies of education interventions. We develop publications and resources for the WWC across many topics in education, all designed to help practitioners find what works for their classrooms and schools and promote rigorous standards in education research.

Project Motivation

In 2002, the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences established the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) to collect, review, and report on studies of education interventions. The WWC produces a variety of publications and resources across many topics in education, all designed to help practitioners find what works for their classrooms and schools and promote rigorous standards in education research.

Prepared For

U.S. Department of Education, Institute of Education Sciences

We develop products for the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) that help states, school districts, and teachers make evidence-based decisions about the right programs and instructional practices for their students.

WWC intervention reports summarize the research on a program or practice, and WWC practice guides provide research-based recommendations on a variety of instructional topics including teaching reading, writing, and math and managing behavior in the classroom. The guides offer strategies and tips that teachers can implement in their classrooms as well as solutions to common roadblocks they might encounter. WWC summaries and tips from the guides offer a quick reference for educators. Mathematica has played a central role in administering the WWC, including expanding the resources available to educators, revising and authoring standards for reviewing education research, and exploring an array of topics that are at the forefront of education decision making.
