WIC Local Agency Breastfeeding Policy and Practices Inventory (WIC BPI)

2011-2014
Prepared For

U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Service

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides food and nutrition education services to low-income mothers, infants, and children who are nutritionally at risk.

The WIC program also promotes breastfeeding through state and local agency policies and practices designed to inform expectant mothers and new mothers of the well-documented benefits of breastfeeding and, for those mothers that chose to breastfeed, to provide peer counseling and continued support thorough the infant’s first year.

Mathematica is designing and conducting a local and state agency census via web survey of 1,782 local WIC agencies and 90 state and Indian Tribal Organization agencies. This project is describing the breastfeeding policies and practices at State agencies (SAs) and local WIC agencies (LAs); the breastfeeding measures that agencies currently collect and report, and the data systems used to do so; and the associations between breastfeeding outcomes and agencies’ policies and practices. It is also developing a model for an ongoing WIC agency survey capability and monitoring system.
