PCORI Dissemination and Implementation Framework and Toolkit
Each year, U.S. health care organizations and agencies in the public and private sectors spend billions of dollars on patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) and comparative effectiveness research (CER). Yet evidence from that research often takes a long time to reach decision makers—including patients and caregivers, clinicians, and delivery systems leaders. Recognizing the need for strategies to accelerate the sharing of research (dissemination) and to help put it into practice (implementation), the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) commissioned the development of a Dissemination and Implementation (D&I) Framework and D&I Toolkit. These documents, drafted by Mathematica and its partners, AcademyHealth, and Palladian Partners, are intended to help PCORI develop and execute strategic plans for sharing new information with key stakeholders and for putting new evidence into practice to accelerate the improvement of health care delivery and outcomes.
To inform the development of the framework and toolkit, the Mathematica team conducted a literature review of more than 200 peer-reviewed and gray literature sources and conducted interviews, focus groups, and webinars with stakeholders representing different sectors and interests within the health care community. The draft D&I Framework and D&I Toolkit consider PCOR and CER at the population level, the delivery-system level, and the individual level.
